Empty Plates

November 6, 2015

“Sir, give me this water so I won't ever have to come back to this well again,” John 4: 15.

IN the church there are at least two types of people. The half-empty plate people! Thirsting for ease, those people offer half-hearted service that leaves them feeling emptier than their plates.

On the other hand, the over-filled plate people try to do everything instead of something. The trouble lies in neither over-filled nor half-empty plates, but in empty cups.

Thirsty people need to make a trip to the well of living water.

Remember the chorus we sang in Sunday School about the woman at the well?

She went away singing and came back bringing

Others to the water that was not in the well.

And what about Martha? She was so troubled when Jesus came through the door before she had the food ready, she lost it. And then she took it out on Mary.  Martha had her plate of service so heaped with anxiousness she neglected to fill her cup with grace at Jesus' feet.

There's a lesson there for me. Maybe for you too.

Fill my cup, Lord, I lift it up Lord,

Come and quench this thirsting of my soul....

Fill it up, fill it up and make me whole!
